What is Occupancy Rate?

Turkish: Doluluk Oranı

Occupancy rate is the percentage of available room nights that were sold in a given period, calculated by dividing room nights sold by room nights available. It shows how much of the hotel's capacity is being used.

Occupancy is the most basic performance indicator in the hotel business, but on its own it can be misleading. You can always push occupancy up by cutting rates, so occupancy should always be read together with ADR and RevPAR.

Rooms that cannot be sold because of renovation or a serious defect (out of order, OOO) are deducted from available room nights. Whether complimentary (comp) rooms and house-use rooms are included depends on the hotel's reporting policy; what matters is applying the same rule consistently from period to period.

Formula

Occupancy (%) = Room nights sold ÷ Room nights available × 100
Example A 22-room hotel has 22 × 30 = 660 room nights available in a 30-day month. If it sells 495 room nights during the month, occupancy is 495 ÷ 660 = 75%.
